This Unit is designed to provide an introduction to the structure and function of the human body. In this Unit you will learn the organisation of major systems within the human body and, using specific components as examples, develop an understanding of the relationship between structure and function in each of these systems. You will apply this knowledge to investigate how common disease or injury leads to changes in function.

The general aim of this Unit is to enable you to investigate the health and social care provision that is available to meet the needs of people requiring care. You will analyse needs and explore the care planning process involved in identifying needs. You will gain an understanding of the key features of a positive care environment, and explain the role of legislation, including specific pieces of legislation. You will also explore the importance of values and principles in promoting positive care practice.

This Unit enables you to be aware of the history of mental health services and attitudes towards people with mental disorder. The candidate will consider how relevant legislation impacts on the services provided. The candidate should be enabled to consider the mental health continuum and gain knowledge of how mental health problems affect individuals and others. The candidate will investigate services available to people with mental health problems and for those who support people with mental health problems.

This Unit is designed to develop your understanding of the principles of reablement and of the impact that specific conditions, and other factors, may have on an individual’s ability to maintain daily life skills. The Unit also aims to develop your ability to adopt a reablement ethos within your role and to promote an individual’s ability to self-manage. The Unit includes workplace experience to develop the qualities and skills required for promotion of reablement by providing evidence of work carried out in a Health and/or Social Care environment.

For this Unit you must demonstrate that you value and treat people equally and with respect and dignity, encouraging and respecting the individual’s preferences and protecting them from danger, harm and abuse.
