The Unit aims to develop your’ sociological imagination, which is a way of explaining sociology and its relevance to society today. This understanding will enable you to recognise the contribution sociology makes to professional practice across the range of care and education settings. Using this as a foundation you will go on to explore the importance of adopting a human rights approach to practice. You will evaluate a range of influences on policy and legislation that underpin practice in care and education settings.

The purpose of this Unit is to enable you to gain an understanding of the health wellbeing and safeguarding issues for those who access provision from social services care and/or education settings. You will learn the importance of the holistic nature of health wellbeing and safeguarding the impact of socio-economic factors and the need to apply a person centred approach in the delivery of services.

The Unit recognises that leadership is about what we do and how we engage and communicate and behave with and towards other people. It aims to help develop understanding of the importance of shared purpose and integrated services to aspire to what could be. It also aims to develop the skills and understanding needed to develop personal and safe services.

This Unit enables you to understand the stages and strands of human development across the lifespan. Drawing on contemporary debate and research will further enhance your’ understanding of the complexities of human development and enable you to consider contributions from psychological approaches related to all ages and stages of human development.

Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) are based on national standards which are drawn up by people from industry, commerce and education. This means that if you have SVQ Units included in your qualification, then you have a way of proving that you can do your job well, to national standards agreed by whatever industry or commercial sector you are in. SVQs send powerful messages to employers:

  • you can do your job confidently and well
  • you are motivated, confident and ambitious
  • you are ready to take on responsibility
  • you are committed to your work
